We’re sorry it’s been so long! Blame Matt. However, like all good artists, we’ve made a comeback and in the first episode since August, Owen and Matt keep it simple with just the two of them, no guests.

In yet another all new studio, (The Ground Floor Studio), the boys whip through what’s been going on in their lives, which amounts to not much. They discuss bad language and how they come across at work, celebrate the show’s one year anniversary with no fanfare, and discuss how President Obama’s first year in office has gone. The Oscar Wants a Sausage Team are back with a bumper new episode to discuss the tragic passing of Michael Jackson. AKA – The King of Pop. To discuss such a momentous event in our lives, we assembled a team of heavy-weight pundits. The first guest is the elusive Geoff NoSurname, who after a 17 episode break to recover from the first show is back with a bang. To compliment Geoff on his chat is the marvelous Alexis Powell, returning to the show after appearing in Episode 6. We knew we would have to pull out all the stops for this one and believe we've lined up a masterclass in irreverent chat.

Recording in the all new Dennis Park Studio, we jump straight into the assessment of Michael Jackson – his life, his music, his death and where his brain is currently located. So it’s been a while but due to a few technical issues we’ve been sitting on a some new episodes of Oscar Wants A Sausage. In out fifteenth instalment of everyone’s favourite irreverent and irrelevant chat, the boys welcome Jo and Jo AKA The Two Jo’s into the Chaos Studios. It was a special occasion for all concerned with the girls not only being the first female guests invited on but also the only guests we’ve had that have listened to all of the previous material.

In the episode the girls give us the low down on their haunted house, why Paul McKenna hypnosis does or doesn’t work, how come the moon is visible in day light and the process of evolution gets summed up very succinctly.

1. SHOULD WE KILL HEALTHY PEOPLE FOR THEIR ORGANS?
Suppose Bill is a healthy man without family or loved ones. Would it be ok painlessly to kill him if his organs would save five people, one of whom needs a heart, another a kidney, and so on? If not, why not?

Consider another case: you and six others are kidnapped, and the kidnapper somehow persuades you that if you shoot dead one of the other hostages, he will set the remaining five free, whereas if you do not, he will shoot all six. (Either way, he'll release you.)

If in this case you should kill one to save five, why not in the previous, organs case? If in this case too you have qualms, consider yet another: you're in the cab of a runaway tram and see five people tied to the track ahead. You have the option of sending the tram on to the track forking off to the left, on which only one person is tied. Surely you should send the tram left, killing one to save five.
But then why not kill Bill?

2. ARE YOU THE SAME PERSON WHO STARTED READING THIS ARTICLE?
Consider a photo of someone you think is you eight years ago. What makes that person you? You might say he she was composed of the same cells as you now. But most of your cells are replaced every seven years. You might instead say you're an organism, a particular human being, and that organisms can survive cell replacement - this oak being the same tree as the sapling I planted last year.

But are you really an entire human being? If surgeons swapped George Bush's brain for yours, surely the Bush look-alike, recovering from the operation in the White House, would be you. Hence it is tempting to say that you are a human brain, not a human being.

But why the brain and not the spleen? Presumably because the brain supports your mental states, eg your hopes, fears, beliefs, values, and memories. But then it looks like it's actually those mental states that count, not the brain supporting them. So the view is that even if the surgeons didn't implant your brain in Bush's skull, but merely scanned it, wiped it, and then imprinted its states on to Bush's pre-wiped brain, the Bush look-alike recovering in the White House would again be you.

But the view faces a problem: what if surgeons imprinted your mental states on two pre-wiped brains: George Bush's and Gordon Brown's? Would you be in the White House or in Downing Street? There's nothing on which to base a sensible choice. Yet one person cannot be in two places at once.

In the end, then, no attempt to make sense of your continued existence over time works. You are not the person who started reading this article.

3. IS THAT REALLY A COMPUTER SCREEN IN FRONT OF YOU?
What reason do you have to believe there's a computer screen in front of you? Presumably that you see it, or seem to. But our senses occasionally mislead us. A straight stick half-submerged in water sometimes look bent; two equally long lines sometimes look different lengths.

Are things always as they seem? The Muller-Lyer illusion indicates not
But this, you might reply, doesn't show that the senses cannot provide good reasons for beliefs about the world. By analogy, even an imperfect barometer can give you good reason to believe it's about to rain.

Before relying on the barometer, after all, you might independently check it by going outside to see whether it tends to rain when the barometer indicates that it will. You establish that the barometer is right 99% of the time. After that, surely, its readings can be good reasons to believe it will rain.

Perhaps so, but the analogy fails. For you cannot independently check your senses. You cannot jump outside of the experiences they provide to check they're generally reliable. So your senses give you no reason at all to believe that there is a computer screen in front of you."

4. DID YOU REALLY CHOOSE TO READ THIS ARTICLE?
Suppose that Fred existed shortly after the Big Bang. He had unlimited intelligence and memory, and knew all the scientific laws governing the universe and all the properties of every particle that then existed. Thus equipped, billions of years ago, he could have worked out that, eventually, planet Earth would come to exist, that you would too, and that right now you would be reading this article.
After all, even back then he could have worked out all the facts about the location and state of every particle that now exists.

And once those facts are fixed, so is the fact that you are now reading this article. No one's denying you chose to read this. But your choice had causes (certain events in your brain, for example), which in turn had causes, and so on right back to the Big Bang. So your reading this was predictable by Fred long before you existed. Once you came along, it was already far too late for you to do anything about it.

Now, of course, Fred didn't really exist, so he didn't really predict your every move. But the point is: he could have. You might object that modern physics tells us that there is a certain amount of fundamental randomness in the universe, and that this would have upset Fred's predictions. But is this reassuring? Notice that, in ordinary life, it is precisely when people act unpredictably that we sometimes question whether they have acted freely and responsibly. So freewill begins to look incompatible both with causal determination and with randomness. None of us, then, ever do anything freely and responsibly."

IN CONCLUSION
Let me be clear: the point is absolutely not that you or I must bite these bullets. Some philosophers have a taste for bullets; but few would accept all the conclusions above and many would accept none. But the point, when you reject a conclusion, is to diagnose where the argument for it goes wrong.

Doing this in philosophy goes hand-in-hand with the constructive side of our subject, with providing sane, rigorous, and illuminating accounts of central aspects of our existence: freewill, morality, justice, beauty, consciousness, knowledge, truth, meaning, and so on.

Rarely does this allow us to put everything back where we found it. There are some surprises, some bullets that have to be bitten; sometimes it's a matter simply of deciding which. But even when our commonsense conceptions survive more or less intact, understanding is deepened. As TS Eliot once wrote:
"…the end of our exploring,
Will be to arrive where we started,
And know the place for the first time."

There’s a new man in town for Episode VI of Oscar Wants A Sausage and he goes by the name of Alexis Powell. Sadly Geoff No-Surname could not make it to the Chaos Studio for the show, so Owen and Matt grill Alexis alone in the most unstructured
free-for-all so far. Alexis drops his wisdom on Brandgate, censorship, The Daily Mail, The US Elections and using the word ‘Cunt’ in a public place. Alexis talked so much we didn’t even have time for a competition! So look out for a roll over in next weeks show when we hope to have a comedy legend in the studio and if Geoff has finished his Five-setter, maybe he’ll show up too.

The iconic baby on the front of Nivarna's Nevermind album is now seventeen and has posed for a new picture in the same pool for photographer John Chapple. In this one, at least he's got his shorts on.

In Episode 3 of Oscar Wants A Sausage we had a very dear friend Mr Jack Solesbury in the studio for some banal banter. We also welcomed back Marc Baker from episode 2, who after failing to make it home the night before, stayed around to voice his opinion. This week we discuss more eyeballs, Owen introduces his special game Desert Island Dicks prompting much debate about the BT adverts, Matt reads a list of things which piss him off, and we discuss Cedric the Michael Jackson impersonator and Madonna’s right to refuse.

Heavy Load The Movie and Gig – Review

The Oscar Wants A Sausage team were lucky enough to get a ticket to the British premier of Heavy Load The Movie, a documentary by Jerry Rothwell about the Brighton based punk band which is made of members with and without learning difficulties. The film, recorded over two years documents their travels while touring and the difficulties the bands encounter trying to record an album, stay on the road and get along together.

It’s a fantastic piece of film making, which not only honestly profiles all the band members and the band dynamic but also documents the birth of their Stay Up Late campaign - A campaign to raise awareness and encourage less stringent shift patterns of carers, allowing service users the opportunity to socialise as they please. It has some genuine laugh out lad moments and each member is treated to equal screen time, which is a big plus, because it would have been easy for Rothwell and the producers to focus on the learning difficulties aspect of band. While it is not ignored that three of the members, Michael, Jim and Simon all have disabilities, it’s is not dwelled upon. They are shown as independent musicians, longing for the chance to be where they are happiest.

The other two members, Paul and Mick are real champions to the rest of the band, and hold it together which things get tough. They keep the band focussed on their task and provide an outlet for the musical expression, all with a smile on their face and seemingly joy in their hearts. When Mick and his family take the decision to move to France, Paul remains with The Load and keeps the wheels on the track, taking control of the bands gig and touring schedule. He really keeps Heavy Load going, but no-one is more relieved when Mick agrees to return to tour and record with the band than Paul. Mainly because he doesn’t need to find anymore fill in guitarists.

The film moves along at a great pace and provides a fantastic insight into the band members discovering themselves musically and highlights some of their performances culminating with the set at the Wychwood Festival.

After the film, the band gave a Q&A session before heading into the theatre at the ICA for an exclusive performance. On stage the energy was frenetic and the band ran through 30mins of their best material. It was a pleasure to see them perform live after watching the film, as it gave the audience and opportunity to see each band member perform their role in the creation of The Load’s unique sound.

Anyone with an interest in the punk movement should check out the movie and try and catch the band in a live performance while you still can, because if Michael leaves like he keeps threatening to, it won’t be the same again.
